R∴W∴ Leonel L. Cortizo Sr was raised as a Master Mason at Goldenrule Clermont McKinley Lodge No. 486 on January 24, 1995. In less than a month, he was already an appointed Officer in his Lodge. Holding many chairs on his Masonic Journey, he served as Master of his Lodge as well as Master of Floral Park Lodge No. 1016 and Monticello Lodge No. 521.

 

He has also served Masonry in several other roles, such as President of the Sixth Manhattan District Association and the Founding President of the Second Nassau Master, Wardens and Deacons Assoc., Vice-Chairman of the Grand Lodge Youth Committee, Grand Steward of both the Nassau and Second Nassau Districts. In addition to serving as President of the Metropolitan Staff Officers Association. Of course, we also cannot fail to mention that he was Santa Claus for 17 years at the Sixth Manhattan District Christmas Party at Grand Lodge and designed and created the Grand Lodge Girl Scout Award. Brother Cortizo is also active in several other Masonic organizations. He is a member of Zerubbabel Chapter No. 149 Royal Arch Masons, serving as High Priest in 2006 and Trustee since 2008. A member of the Valleys of New York City and Rockville Centre, Scottish Rite, Kismet Temple Shriners, Trustee of LIER Grotto.

 

In addition, to serving as President of the Kiwanis Club of Woodridge, NY, he has also served as Exalted Ruler of the New Hyde Park - North Shore Elks Club 2107 BPOE.

Since 1971, he has also been able to be a highly active member of the Boy Scouts of America. The young men in the New York City area in Troops 103, 219, 269, 20 and 96 have grown up knowing him as not only a Scoutmaster, but also as an Advisor and Executive Board Member of several Districts, Council and National Committees. In 1987 he represented the Boy Scouts of America at the International Jamboree in Australia, where he received the prestigious International White Feather Commissioner Award for his service. In 2015, he travelled to the Japan International Jamboree as Territorial Commissioner.

Professionally, he received an MBA from New York University as well as studying Computer Science and Development at Wharton University and Computer Administration at the IBM International School. He retired in 2010 after 52 years in the Information technology field.

Married to Joan S. Kennedy for the last 24 years, he has been a Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Mentor, Brother, and Inspiration.

As his life motto, he has stated, “I do what I do for the benefit of the Craft and for people around me. Life is too short and if you do not help others, what is the purpose of us living.”
